Description
Perennial English Lavender from genetically diverse lavender field in Paradise, Montana
- seed sewing instructions: Growing Lavender. Start seed indoors in shallow flats 8-12 weeks prior to transplanting outside. Sow 4 seeds per inch, barely covered as light aids in their germination. If possible, maintain evenly moist but not soggy soil temperatures around 70 degrees. The seed germination rate for Lavender can be poor so pay close attention to culture and environment. When watering, moisten the soil but avoid wetting the plants as lavender does not like sodden conditions. Water earlier in the day so that soil is dryer at night to avoid damping off. Providing good air circulation after plants are germinated will also help. When seedlings have three sets of true leaves, transplant into packs, 2” pots or in flats 2” apart. When all danger of frost is over and plants have been hardened off, plant outdoors 18” apart for Hidcote and 2 ½’ apart for Munstead in well drained soil. Lavender prefers a slightly alkaline soil, so amending acidic soil will improve viability. Although I grow lots of Hidcote and Munstead Lavender on my zone 4 Montana farm, it is generally considered hardy to zone 5. Environment is everything for plants, so for best results, place Lavender in a bright sunny spot with good air circulation and good drainage.
